San Patricio Pioneer Dies of Influenza

Rachel S DoughertyFuneral Services for Mrs. Rachel Dougherty Will Be Held In San Patricio Wednesday Morning.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning for Mrs. Rachel Dougherty, 86, who died at 10: 45 o’clock Monday night at her home in San Patricio, following an illness of about a week with influenza.

The services will be held in San Patricio. Requiem mass will be said. Burial will be in the San Patricio cemetery under direction of Maxwell P. Dunne of Corpus Christi.

Mrs. Dougherty was a pioneer resident of Corpus Christi and San Patricio. She was born in Hagerstown, N. J. on Oct. 2, 1842. Her maiden name was Rachel Ann Sullivan. She came to Corpus Christi with her parents, John and Elizabeth Sullivan, about 1854, and married Robert Dougherty, a noted educator of that time at San Patricio. MR. Dougherty established the Hidalgo Academy here about 53 years ago, and later moved it to San Patricio, which at that time was the center of activity in this section of the sate. It is said that this academy was the first college or school to be established in this section of the state.

Mrs. Dougherty is survived by seven children, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The children are J. C. Dougherty of Beeville, Miss Lydia Dougherty and Miss Mary Dougherty of Beeville; Mrs. Kate D. Bluntzer, widow of the late Vincent Bluntzer; J. R. Dougherty of Beeville; Mrs. G. R. Nogueira of San Antonio and F. X. Dougherty, Orange Grove rancher.

Surviving grandchildren include Robert Bluntzer, Mrs. B. D. Tarlton, Justine Bluntzer, Rachel Bluntzer, Rachel Dougherty, May Tarlton Dougherty, James, R. Dougherty Jr., Dudley Tarlton Dougherty, Robert Dougherty, Gilmore Nogueria, Robert Norgueria and Francis Nogueria. The great grandchildren are Dudley Tarlton, Jr., Mary Frances Tarlton and Vincent Tarlton, children of Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Tarlton of Corpus Christi. The sisters surviving Mrs. Dougherty are Mrs. Mary S. Borden of Corpus Christi and Miss Josephine Sullivan of Kenedy.
