Miss Mary Dougherty Pioneer of Area, Dies
The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dougherty of Old san Patricio, she was born Sept. 17, 1875. Her father was a native of County Donegal, Ireland and came to this community shortly after it was colonized by Irish families under direction of Empressarios McMullen and McGloin in the 1820’s. He established St. Paul’s Academy at the Dougherty home at Round Lake, one of the early schools of South Texas, and taught classes there for many years.
Miss Dougherty taught school at Slator and other towns in West Texas, and was principal of the Sinton high school for a number of years. She also taught in Beeville schools for a time. Since her retirement from teaching, she had made her home at Round Lake, residing in the large two-story frame structure, which formerly housed St. Paul’s Academy.
She survived by two sisters, Mrs. Kate Dougherty Bluntzer of Corpus Christi and Mrs. Gilmore Nogueira of San Antonio, of one brother, Francis X. Dougherty of Sandia, and a number of nephews and nieces of Corpus Christi, Beeville and San Antonio. Two brothers, Chris Dougherty and James R. Dougherty and a sister Miss Lida Dougherty are deceased.
A rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today and again at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the family home.
Requiem high mass will be at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic church in San Patricio with Msgr. Engelbert Bartosch officiating. The Most Rev. M. S. Garriga, bishop of the diocese of Corpus Christi, will deliver the sermon.
Burial will be in San Patricio Cemetery under the direction of Dobie Funeral Home of Mathis. Nephews will act as pallbearers.
